OpenRouter Competitors and Pricing Comparison

OpenRouter competitors fall into two groups: aggregators that compete on breadth and direct providers that compete on owning the model, billing, and rate-limit relationship. A pure aggregator comparison is useful when you need routing flexibility, but direct APIs can win when a production workload mostly calls one lab or one model family. This ranking therefore uses current coverage as the first signal, then gives you the provider metadata needed to judge whether the competitor is viable for your own traffic pattern.

Coverage is not the same as being cheaper. A provider can list fewer models and still be the right OpenRouter competitor if it carries the model you actually use at a lower per-token rate. The safest workflow is to shortlist providers with enough model rows, open their detail pages, then compare input, output, cached-token, and source timestamps before changing routes. For high-volume workloads, even a small per-1M token difference can be material once multiplied by daily request volume.
